Gum Over Platinum

Platinum/palladium and gum bichromate are two of the most venerable of the alternative processes.  Used alone they are each capable of creating beautiful, evocative images.  When used in combination they become a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts

There is a lot to cover in this workshop and it will be beneficial if you've had some previous alt process experience.  The first day of the workshop we will make platinum/palladium prints on the two papers that work the best for the combined gum/platinum process.  You will learn proper coating techniques, paper preparation and controlling contrast using the Na2 method. At the end of the day we will apply gelatin sizing to the prints you made to ready them for gum bichromate overprinting. 

On the second day you will learn the fundamentals of the gum bichromate process including a novel approach to coating pioneered by the instructor that provides for very smooth, creamy gum layers that blend seamlessly with the underlying platinum/palladium print. This process is fun to do and soon becomes addicting.  Adding one or more layers of gum bichromate to a platinum/palladium print results in prints that can range from subtle to wildly colorful; the final choice is up to you. Combining these processes allows you to use both the left and right sides of your brain to produce work that is uniquely yours.

The balance of payment must be received on or before June 1, 2009.
