The Digital Negative

This workshop is a stand alone shop designed to get the student printing digital negatives for a variety of alternative processes utilizing a UV exposure system, but is ideally suited as a support class for both Kerik's Gum over Platinum workshop and Sandy King's Carbon Transfer Process workshop later in the week. Each can be taken in conjunction for a reduced rate if you so choose.

The digital negative has been revolutionary to alt process printing in that very precise control can be maintained for the particular process in which you are working. The perfect marriage of the 19th and 21st century.

This workshop is intended for people who have previous experience in platinum printing and/or other alternative processes. In it you will learn how to make digital negatives using the Quad Tone RIP (QTR) software and then refine your printing skills in platinum/palladium, kallitype, van dyke, cyanotype, etc. You will learn how calibrate the system for your Epson printer using a straightforward approach that is streamlined thanks to a Photoshop script written by this workshop's assisting instructor,  David Eisenlord. The script eliminates much of the tedious math and measurements required to create the Photoshop curves utilized in the process. You will also receive a copy of the script for your own use as well as a detailed, step-by-step illustrated manual.

Previous experience with platinum/palladium or other similar alternative processes (kallitype, van dyke, cyanotype, etc.) is plus as is a working knowledge of Photoshop and other computer imaging programs.
